Exterior Door Restoration.

This was quite a job. These huge old doors had seen better days to say the least. The process of removing them was a task in and of itself. Once back to the shop, we scraped and wire brushed whatever finish still remained. There were traces of old paint jobs deep inside some of the wood grain but we were able to clean that out. We decontaminated the wood with multiple products and disassembled everything we possibly could. After sanding through the grits, we treated the door with oxalic acid to remove some of the substantial stains on the door. This was mildly successful after 2 treatments. There were areas of rot in the door and we did replace some small sections. In others, we poured in Abatron liquid wood treatment. A darker stain was almost a must due to some of the staining in the wood. Once a color was decided upon we used dyes to match our exterior wood filler to fill in some surface level imperfections. The door was treated with a pre stain conditioner and then stained. The door was sealed with General Finishes exterior 450 in a semi gloss. We like this finish on doors because it allows for moisture to escape if any does get into the door. The finish is able to be toned which we did in order to get to our desired color and achieve an even look on the doors. This is a recent job and we’ll update the photos once we hang them up!

Before photos

we removed these pieces and then re attached with tighter joints/closed gaps

even with a conditioner applied first, the stain was blotchy and uneven. would need to be fixed with toning
